An effective growth of hierarchical BNNTs/SiC fibers with enhanced interfacial properties

Tailoring the SiC fiber-matrix interface in micron-sized fibers is crucial to attaining enhanced mechanical properties ceramic reinforced composites. Herein, authors report growth of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNT) onto (SiCf), creating a fuzzy fiber architecture promote surface area for defined load path matrix and improve these structures. Successful BNNT-growth achieved by oxide chemical vapor deposition method combined with trapping optimum parameters 1200 °C 1 h, comparatively low temperature those reported literature. The strength loss SiCf after exposure was attributed high process temperature, similar what has been observed Hence, BNNT does not lead additional on measured single tensile test. Moreover, through this direct method, grown BNNTs utilize surface-anchored BNNTs/SiCf, good adhesion prevent fiber-fiber sliding pullout increasing interfacial shear (IFSS) epoxy. Furthermore, microbond tests show that BNNTs/SiCf increased IFSS at least 87.8% compared as-received SiCf.
